Dear Resident As the darker nights draw in, Northamptonshire Police would like to remind residents of the importance of taking extra precautions to keep your home, belongings, and loved ones safe. Burglary can have a lasting emotional impact on victims, but by taking some simple steps, you can significantly reduce the chances of becoming a target. Our aim is to work together as a community to make our neighbourhoods safer. Many burglaries are opportunistic, with offenders taking advantage of unlocked doors, open windows, or valuables left in plain sight. A few small changes to your daily routine can make a big difference. Home Security Tips Always lock doors and windows when leaving the house – even if you’re only stepping out for a short time. Make sure your locks meet the latest security standards. Double-check doors and windows before bed, including garages, sheds, and side gates. Keep keys out of sight and away from letterboxes – thieves can use tools to reach through and grab them. Don’t leave valuables visible through windows or doors. Laptops, handbags, and car keys should be stored out of view. Use timer switches or smart lighting to make it look like someone is home when you’re out during the evening. Consider installing a burglar alarm or video doorbell – these act as visible deterrents and can provide useful footage if something happens. Trim back hedges and bushes around doors and windows to remove hiding spots. Join or start a Neighbourhood Watch scheme to share information and keep an eye out for each other. Outbuildings and Vehicles Don’t forget about sheds, garages, and vehicles – they’re often targeted for tools, bikes, and gardening equipment. Fit strong padlocks and security lighting to outbuildings. Keep valuable items like bicycles chained inside using a quality D-lock or ground anchor. Never leave tools or ladders outside – these can be used to gain access to your home. Remove valuables from vehicles and lock them, even when parked on your driveway.Marking and Registering Your Property Property marking makes it easier for police to return stolen items if recovered. Use a UV pen or engraving tool to mark your valuables with your postcode. Register items such as bikes, phones, and electronics for free at www.immobilise.com.Reporting and Sharing Information
